Resumo:
Palaeomagnetism has made enormous contributions to geophysics, such as the discovery of polarity reversals of the Earth's magnetic field and their vital role in working out the history of sea-floor spreading and the evolution of plate tectonics. But it has found important applications in other – quite distinct - topics as well. This talk will deal with two of these:- (1) The 'fossil' magnetism retained by certain archaeological structures and what it tells us about the long-term dynamics of the Earth's core. (2) The magnetic encoding of past climatic changes in certain geological strata and what it tells us about the waxing and waning of the Ice Ages.
